Write a letter to your son he’ll open on the day you choose

La réponse courte
Tell him something he doesn’t know about the day he was born, what you see in him, one mistake you learned from, and the advice you’d give if you had one minute. A page is enough. Then pick the day, his 18th, graduation or his first morning away, and let the letter keep it.
Letters from parents to sons often come out as advice. The ones that get kept tend to be about something else: being seen. Write about who he is, and let the advice be one line.
What to write in a letter to your son
- The day he arrived. What the weather was, who called first, what you thought when you first held him.
- What you see in him. Kindness, stubbornness, the way he explains things. Be specific.
- A mistake you learned from. Sons often only hear their parents’ successes. Give him one real failure.
- One piece of advice, not ten. The one you’d give if you had a minute.
- Permission. To change his mind, to come home, to be unsure.
- What you want him to know on that day, in one plain sentence.
From dad or from mom, keep your own voice. If you tend to joke, joke; he will recognise you in it.
Days worth sending it on
- His 18th birthday. Written when he is small, read when he is grown.
- His first week away. College or a first job: schedule it for the first Monday, in the morning, when the new place still feels strange.
- Graduation. Pick the morning so he reads it before the ceremony.
- His wedding morning, with a placeholder date you move once it is set.
- The birth of his first child. Some letters are for the day a son becomes a father.
A short example to borrow from
An example only. Your own words will mean more.
Dear Sam,
you were born at 4:12 on a Tuesday
and the nurse said you had a serious face.
You still do, when you’re thinking.
I got a lot wrong at your age. The thing I got right
was calling home. Call home.
I’m proud of you, today and every day before it.
Dad
How to make sure it reaches him on the day
- Write it on Carry Echo. Words are free and unlimited. A plan lets you place photos on the page and add your voice or a short video.
- Choose the day and the part of the day. Morning is the safest part of the day for most occasions. Read it on his clock rather than yours if he will live elsewhere.
- Give more than one address. Add a second address if you can; over years, one of them will probably change.
He needs no account and no app. On the day, an email arrives from your name with a link, and the letter opens on paper in the browser. Until then you can change the day, or take the letter back to your drafts.
Questions fréquentes
What is a good message from a father to his son?
The best ones are specific: a memory only you have, one thing you admire in him, one mistake you learned from, and a single piece of advice. Being seen matters more to most sons than being instructed.
How do I write a letter to my son for when I’m gone?
Write it for a day that will come anyway, such as his 18th birthday or wedding, rather than tying it to your absence. On Carry Echo a letter with a day is delivered on that day even if you stop paying for a plan, and it doesn’t wait for you to sign in again.
How long should the letter be?
About a page. Long enough to say something true, short enough that he will read it again.
