Letters for the days you might not be there for

Pour l’instant, nos articles sont rédigés en anglais.

La réponse courte

Write for the days rather than for your absence: an 18th birthday, a wedding morning, the day they become a parent. Give each letter its date. On Carry Echo a letter with a day is delivered on that day even if you stop paying or can’t sign in again, so they arrive whether or not you are there.

Many parents think about this quietly, after a scare or a diagnosis, or simply at 3 a.m. It is a loving thing to do, and it doesn’t have to be sad to read. The letters that comfort most are the ones written for a day, not about a death.

What to write

  • Write for a day, not an ending. “Happy 18th birthday” reads very differently from “If you’re reading this…”.
  • Say who they are to you. The specific things only you noticed.
  • Give them a story about your own life they would otherwise never hear.
  • Tell them what you hope, and give them permission to live differently.
  • Leave out instructions. A letter isn’t the place for a will.

How it works, honestly

Carry Echo delivers by date. It doesn’t know if something has happened to you, and it doesn’t need to: a letter with a day is kept sealed and delivered on that day, whether you are there or not, and even if you stop paying for a plan.

It is still worth telling one person you trust that the letters exist, and keeping recipients’ addresses current. Email is partly outside anyone’s control, and an address can stop working over the years.

If you change your mind, you can move a letter’s day or take it back to your drafts at any time before it is delivered.

How to make sure it arrives on the day

  1. Write it on Carry Echo. Words are free and unlimited; a plan adds photos placed on the page, voice notes and short video.
  2. Choose the day and the part of the day. Morning is usually kindest, read on their time zone.
  3. Give every address you have for them. The letter goes to each one, so it still arrives if an address has changed.

They need no account and no app. On the day, an email comes from your name with a link, and the letter opens on paper in their browser. Until then you can move the day or take the letter back to your drafts.

Questions fréquentes

What should I write in a letter to my child in case I die?

Write for a day in their life, a birthday or a wedding, rather than about your death: who they are to you, a story from your life, and what you hope for them.

Will the letters be delivered if I’m no longer here?

Yes. Each letter with a day is delivered on that day; delivery doesn’t depend on you signing in or still paying. Keep their addresses current and tell someone you trust that the letters exist.
