First Birthday Time Capsule Letters: Guests Write Now, They Read Them at 18

· · 3 min read

The short answer

Set out a table with prompts and let each guest write a short letter to the child, to be read on their 18th birthday. Good prompts: a wish for them, a memory of their parents, and one line about the world today. Then make sure the letters survive seventeen years: seal and store them, or have them delivered on the day.

A first birthday is a party for the adults; the child won’t remember it. A stack of letters from everyone who came, opened at 18, is how they get to be there after all.

How to set up the letter table

  1. A small table away from the cake, with a sign: “Write to [name], to open on their 18th birthday.”
  2. Cards with a prompt on each so nobody stares at a blank page.
  3. Good pens and envelopes, or a QR code for guests who’d rather write on their phone.
  4. A box, or a list of names, so you know who wrote.

Free printables for the table

A sign with a QR code, and prompt cards to write on. They’re free, they print at home, and the code opens Carry Echo, where a guest can write from their phone and choose the 18th birthday. Before the party, write on the sign the email address the letters should go to: one you’ve made for your child, or your own.

Print at actual size (100%). The sign prints on 5×7 card, or on a full sheet and trimmed along its border; cut the cards along the dashed lines.

What guests can write

  • A wish: what they hope the child will be like at 18.
  • A memory of the parents: how they met, what they were like before the baby.
  • The world today: prices, songs, the phone everyone has.
  • A piece of advice they wish they’d had at 18.
  • Who they are to the child: grandparent, godparent, neighbour, the friend who brought the cake.

Dear Mia,

today you ate your first cake with both hands

and your dad cried a little. Don’t tell him I said.

Petrol costs too much and everyone is on their phone.

I hope at 18 you are exactly as loud as you are today.

Love, Auntie Sam

Making sure they arrive in seventeen years

The weak point of a time capsule is time. Boxes get moved, attics get cleared, and the day passes. Two ways to protect the letters:

  • Seal and store them somewhere you won’t move, with the date written on the box and a reminder in two calendars.
  • Have them delivered. On Carry Echo each guest (or you, typing them up) can give a letter the child’s 18th birthday. They arrive by email that morning, and addresses can be updated as the years go by.

Questions people ask

What should I write on a 1st birthday time capsule letter?

A wish for the child at 18, a memory of their parents, a line about the world today, and who you are to them. Short is fine.

When should time capsule letters be opened?

Most families choose the 18th birthday; some choose 16 or 21. Pick one day for all the letters so they’re read together.
