Write a letter to your granddaughter for the day it matters most

The short answer

Tell her what her parent was like at her age, a story from your own life she will never hear otherwise, what you love in her now, and what you hope for her. Add your voice if you can. Then choose her day, an 18th birthday, a graduation, a wedding morning, and let the letter wait for it.

A grandparent’s letter is often the only place a grandchild will ever hear certain stories: how you met, what the house smelled like, what her mother was like at sixteen. Written now, it arrives on a day you may or may not be there for, and it will be read either way.

What to write to your granddaughter

  • Her parent, at her age. Nothing makes a teenager laugh like evidence her mother was once one too.
  • Your own story. Where you grew up, your first job, the choice that changed your life.
  • What you love in her now. The small, specific things.
  • What you have learned, in a sentence or two, not a lecture.
  • Family things. A recipe, a saying, the name of a street.
  • Your voice. A short voice note of you reading the letter is the part many families treasure most.

Days worth sending it on

  • Her 18th birthday, the most common choice for a grandparent’s letter.
  • Her graduation. Morning, before the ceremony.
  • Her wedding morning, with a placeholder date moved once the day is set.
  • Her first child’s birth. A letter from a great-grandparent is a rare thing.

A short example to borrow from

An example, to show the tone. Yours should sound like you.

My dear Ava,

your mother was eighteen once too,

and she dyed her hair green for a week.

I kept a photo. Ask her about it.

You have your grandfather’s laugh.

I hope you use it often.

With all my love, always,

Grandma

How to make sure it reaches her on the day

  1. Write it on Carry Echo. Words are free and unlimited. A plan lets you place photos on the page and add your voice or a short video.
  2. Choose the day and the part of the day. Choose the morning, read on her time zone, so it lands before the day gets busy.
  3. Give more than one address. Give her parent’s address as well as hers. The letter goes to every address you add, so it still arrives if one has changed.

She needs no account and no app. On the day, an email arrives from your name with a link, and the letter opens on paper in the browser. Until then you can change the day, or take the letter back to your drafts.

Questions people ask

What should I write in a letter to my 18-year-old granddaughter?

Something only you can give her: a story about her parent at her age, a piece of your own life, what you love about her now, and one thing you’ve learned. Keep it warm and short enough to reread.

How can a grandparent send a letter to be opened in the future?

Write it on Carry Echo, choose her birthday or another day up to sixty years ahead, and add her email and her parent’s. It stays sealed until that morning and then arrives by email.

Can I include my voice?

Yes. On a plan you can add voice notes and short videos alongside the letter.
