Write a letter to your grandson for the day it matters most

The short answer

Tell him a story from your own youth, what his father or mother was like at his age, what you see in him, and one lesson you learned the hard way. Keep it to a page, add your voice if you can, and choose his day: an 18th birthday, a graduation, a wedding.

Grandsons rarely ask their grandparents the questions they later wish they had. A letter answers a few of them in advance.

What to write to your grandson

  • You, at his age. Your first car, your first job, the trouble you got into.
  • His parent, at his age. A story he can take home and tease them with.
  • What you see in him. Be specific; he will remember it.
  • One lesson, the one you learned the hard way.
  • Where he comes from. A place, a name, a family habit worth keeping.

Days worth sending it on

  • His 18th birthday. Written now, read when he is grown.
  • His first week away from home. Schedule it for a Monday morning.
  • Graduation, or his wedding morning. Use a placeholder date for a wedding and move it later.

A short example to borrow from

An example only.

Dear Leo,

when I was eighteen I sold my bicycle

to buy a train ticket to the city.

Best money I ever spent.

You’re braver than I was. Use it.

Call your mother. Call me too.

Grandpa

How to make sure it reaches him on the day

  1. Write it on Carry Echo. Words are free and unlimited. A plan lets you place photos on the page and add your voice or a short video.
  2. Choose the day and the part of the day. Morning, read on his time zone, is the safest choice.
  3. Give more than one address. Add his parent’s email too; the letter goes to every address you give.

He needs no account and no app. On the day, an email arrives from your name with a link, and the letter opens on paper in the browser. Until then you can change the day, or take the letter back to your drafts.

Questions people ask

What should I write to a grandson turning 18?

A story from your own youth, what you see in him, and one lesson you learned the hard way. Specific memories matter more than general advice.

Will it still arrive if I’m not able to sign in?

Yes. Once a letter has its day it doesn’t wait for you to do anything; it is delivered that morning, even if you stop paying for a plan.
